Hello Everyone!
For Homework: Read the section
of text below. Use your own experiences
and the reading to answer the question that follows.
Mr. Raymond is a white
man who chose to marry a black woman and have "mixed" children. He
pretends to be a drunk so that the townspeople will have a way to more
comfortably explain his behavior and life choices.
"When I come to
town, […] if I weave a little and drink out of this sack, folks can say Dolphus
Raymond's in the clutches of whiskey—that's why he won't change his ways. He
can't help himself, that's why he lives the way he does.”
Level 1: Why does Ms. Raymond pretend to be drunk? What is he trying to hide/make an excuse for? (Think about historical context)
Level 2: Why are Mr. Raymond's life choices considered a problem?
Level 3: What are Mr. Raymond's life choices ?
